Introduction:

You are welcome to join the Friends of Kagando  as a 'Subscriber' to receive Newsletters about the progress of work at Kagando Hospital and in the surrounding community.  Or you can join as as a 'Supporter' by making a donation.

If you make a donation, we will be added to our list of subscribers automatically .  We prefer donations to be made to General Funds for use at the discretion of the Trustees, but you may express a preference for use of your donation in one of our listed open projects or to support a particular volunteer or even to recommend a new project.

There is a list of currently open designated funds, with a brief explanation, at the bottom of this page.

We also handle large donations for specific projects on request.

Because of our low operating costs you can be sure that virtually all donated money ends being transferred to Uganda or on is spent on items being shipped to Uganda and will be of direct benefit to Kagando or the surrounding area.

You can contact us online (completing and submitting the form below), or by email,  or by post.

Gift Aid Declaration:

If you are a UK Tax Payer and have not already made a declaration if favour of 'Friends of Kagando', please include your address as known to Inland Revenue and select 'YES' in the Gift Aid Declaration section in the on-line form below. Alternatively, download the Multipurpose Form from the button below, and send by post to the Treasurer (address on form).

Gift Aiding will enable 'Friends of Kagando' to collect a further 28% from Inland Revenue to add to the value of your gift.  One 'Declaration' will apply to any gifts you make to Friends of Kagando, whether one-off or regular.  They can be applied up to six years in arrears and stay in force until further notice from the declaree.  Our Treasurer, and sometimes Inland Revenue, may occasionally need to contact you to confirm details.

Even if you are not a UK Tax Payer, please complete the other parts of the form.

New Subscribers who provide their postal address (with or without a donation) will receive a free copy of the 20 minute DVD 'Window on Kagando' to give you a flavour of this amazing place, while stocks last.  Existing subscribers should apply for their copy if not already received.

Donation preferences - open designated funds

NB.  If wishing your donation to go to one of the funds below it is ESSENTIAL that you indicate which one in the on-line submission form, preferably with and additional comment OR write a covering email or letter.  If no fund is stated, the donation will go into the General Fund for use at the discretion of the Trustee.

  • Electricity - The Centre needs a much increased budget for Electicity from the Kilembe Investment Co. grid or for Diesel for the New Generator and the soon to be re-furbished old diesel generator:  The Electricians need some specialist tools and a budget for special switch gear and cable for the hospital site.  The old 11,000 Volt transmission line from Nsenyi needs to be repaired or recovered and a fund started to replace the old turbine and alternator.

  • 'Sponsor a Nurse' - Nurses pay was sometimes delayed in the past due to major cash flow problems.  This no longer happens, but the clinical staff costs have risen and budgets are under severe strain.  £55 per month, gift-aided, pays for one fully trained nurse.  Supporters already give regularly to pay for more than 20 nurses, but much more is required.

  • Theatre/Maternity Extension and Upgrade - An Operating Theatre upgrade is long overdue and the Delivery Suite in Maternity has become very overcrowded recently with a new hospital births initiative.  An accumulated fund is sufficient for the building and basic equipment and has started, but a lot of equipment is very old and needs replacing, including at least one autoclave.  New storage systems would increase efficiency.  A budget for routine replacement and repair of instruments needs to be set up

  • New Ultrasound Scanner -  This fund has closed following purchase and delivery and it is now fully operational.  Diagnostic imaging is a success story with the Xray also fully operational when the electricity supply is sufficient.  A budget is needed for repair and/or replacement of the dark-room equipment and at some stage in the future for digital image storage.  Improved internet access could eventually develop into a second opinion and teaching / audit system.

  • Yorkshire Practice Nurse Aid (YPNA) - This is the charitable arm of the Yorkshire Practice Nurses Association.  They decided to concentrate on a single health area and have, fortunately, chose Kagando for this.  It is a newly formed group, now fully affiliated to Friends of Kagando, which accepts Gift-Aided donations, administers funds destined for Kagando and liaises with on-site advice and practical help.  Make donations via the Friends, Gift-Aided if appropriate and we will credit them to this project.  Their chair and key mover, Rita Miller and colleagues have established regular visits and Rita will be staying in Kagando for at least three months in 2012.  She will concentrate on liaison between the School of Nursing and the Hospital and address achievable ward equipment issues.  Margaret Sentamu, wife of John Sentamu, Archbishop of York and originally from Uganda, has recently agreed to be their Patron.

  • Early Reading Books Project - Friends of Kagando Volunteer, Helen Lyth (see their news/blog), has teamed up with British Charity 'Education Uganda' and her home Church in Scotland to boost reading achievement for pupils and morale for teachers by providing well designed books, slates and chalk to Kagando Primary School.  The more she can raise, the more children will benefit.

  • Sand Filter Project - Geoff Carrier, IT Trainer and Friend of Kagando, based in New Mills, Derbyshire,  has set up a Sand Filter project.  This is an now a recognised Friends of Kagando affiliated organization.  You can donate to this via Friends of Kagando, with a Gift-Aid declaration if appropriate, but it is essential to state 'Sand Filter Project' as the intended recipient at the time of your donation. [Click Here to view Sand Filter project page] See also the [Typhoid Page].

  • KARUCOM - Kagando's Microfinance Project - Many enterprises requiring small loans are ready to run, but capital is lacking.  You can make a direct donation or via our 'Alternative Gifts' scheme (see below).  This includes a package of materials for people who want to raise money from their Church, community, workplace, school etc.

  • Sponsoring a Volunteer - Volunteers who have been agreed by both Kagando Leadership and Friends of Kagando who are sponsored or self-funded can channel their sponsorship, from parents, friends, organisations or their own resources through Friends of Kagando.  Formally accepted volunteers are expected to raise sponsorship donations that will equal or exceed any costs associated with their visit to Kagando and these donations can be gift-aided.  Friends of Kagando will settle air travel and accommodation costs and provide advice, liaison and other support.  Volunteers must be performing specific tasks or functions on behalf of Friends of Kagando in line with the aims and objectives of the charity, though they will have no formal contract with Friends of Kagando and will remain responsible for their own health and safety.  Medical Students and others offering skills or benefits to Kagando over and above those expected of 'elective' students may apply for volunteer status, but, from September 2011, the Friends are not otherwise able to arrange flights or accommodation for them.  A former scheme has been discontinued due to the administrative burden and doubts expressed as to the main beneficiaries in relation to the aims of the charity.

* For friends and relatives who share your outlook on charitable giving and would understand your motives you can make a (gift-aided if appropriate) donation to 'Friends of Kagando' instead of a gift to them and inform them by downloadable card of your action.  There is a 'package of materials' that you can download to run the scheme in a Church or Club or School at Christmas time, for example.
