Short Biographies
Past Trustees
Rob and Jen Morris lived in Kagando with
their four children from 1979 to 1985 as Missionaries
with Africa Inland Mission (AIM) . Both of them grew up in East Africa and were
at school together in Kenya. At Kagando Rob was Medical Superintendant and
shared in the medical workload of the hospital while laying the foundations for
the handover of the management of the hospital to the Church of Uganda.
Jen worked as a nurse as well looking after their four children. Rob is now a senior partner
in General Practice in Handcross in Sussex where Jen is also a practice nurse.
They are founder Trustees with Rob as the current Chairman. They visit
Kagando regularly where Rob is involved in the continuing medical education
program and advises on planning for coping with major medical incidents and
multiple injuries as well
as consulting and advising with the Director and other friends on management
issues.
Maureen Moore
was born and brought up in East Dulwich, South East London, training as a nurse
after working her first five post-school years with Lloyds Bank at their City office.
Following nurse and midwifery training and experience in hospitals in the UK and two years at Mount Hermon
Missionary Training College she began her AIM career as a nurse missionary in
1966 working at Kuluva Hospital in the West Nile region of North Western
Uganda. She moved to Kagando in 1987 as tutor for the Nurse-Aid students
becoming Matron of the Hospital as well as senior tutor when the School of
Nursing and Midwifery was established in 1998 offering a nationally recognised training. On retirement from AIM and Kagando in 2003 she returned to East Dulwich,
where she is active in her local church and continues to visit Kagando
regularly. She was awarded an MBE in 2000 for services to health care in
Uganda. She is a founder Trustee.
Ann
Bennett is a past teacher and schools inspector with an interest in
Christian Mission over many years. She was invited to join the Trustees as
an experienced educationalist, administrator and project manager. She has
advised and reported on education matters and the micro-finance initiative,
taking an active interest in these two key non-hospital community related
components of the Centre. She is a founder Trustee and lives near Haywards
Heath.
Ralph and Ceri
Settatree lived in Northern Kenya for the first two years of their married life
(1972-73) when Ralph was sole doctor at Marsabit Hospital and District Medical
Officer of Health. On completing specialist training in the UK in
obstetrics and gynaecology Ralph worked as a consultant in Birmingham and
Solihull. His re-entry to Medicine in Africa was a training course for
obstetric fistula surgery at Kitovu Hospital, Masaka, Uganda in 2002, visiting Kagando for the first time
in 2003. Following illnesses in 2004 and
2005, Ralph and Ceri re-visited Kagando in February 2006 when Ralph resumed
fistula surgery as well as general obstetrics and gynaecology. He has visited
approximately twice yearly since then. Ceri has become involved in
income generation projects for the disabled and other support. They became
Trustees in 2007. Ralph became Secretary to the Trustees in 2008.
Ralph retired fully from the NHS in 2010. They live in Cheltenham.
Andrew Holt
became a Trustee in 2008. Originally trained as a Solicitor, he switched
to health administrator and is currently a Director of Interhealth, a UK based service advising on and providing health services for
companies and organisations with expatriates working in the Tropics and
elsewhere overseas. He lived in Kagando with his
wife Louise and their two young children when he was Director of KARUDEC from
1992
to 1997 and oversaw the management of the centre passing on entirely to Ugandan nationals as it
is at present. Andrew has qualified in Charity Accounting and took
over the Treasurer role from Jean-Claude Barrault in October 2008.
The family lives in Bracknell, where most Trustee Board meetings are held.
Benson Baguma is the current Director of KARUDEC and therefore the senior
executive based at Kagando. He took up his post in 2003 and lives on the
Campus with his wife Zarianne and his five daughters (when they are not away
at school). Benson was born less than two kilometres from Kagando Hospital
and was a secondary school teacher and head of department before being called
into the Church of Uganda. He was appointed Canon in 2003. A
previous responsibility within South Rwenzori Diocese was running a Christian
Radio Station, where he was particularly noted for his football commentaries!
He was invited to become a Trustee following his visit as Guest of Honour at the
fifth anniversary celebrations of the founding of 'Friends of Kagando' in
January 2008. This is a personal appointment, not 'ex officio', as the
Trustees expect that the Church of Uganda will probably appoint him to another
role within the next few years. The 'Friends' wanted to continue to
benefit from his youth, friendship, wisdom, commitment to Kagando and local
knowledge for as long as possible even though they know it will be difficult for
him to attend all meetings in person. It will be the best possible excuse to
hold some Trustees meetings in Kagando!
Mr David and Dr Ann Vallance joined the Board of Trustees in May 2011. Ann Vallance (nee Chapman) was the key mover and remains the main supporter
of the Palliative Care service at Kagando. She continues to visit regularly
following her retirement from General Practice in Manchester.
Recently re-married to similarly widowed David, they now share their enthusiasm
and David has been putting his business, and Church eldership skills to use.
They live in Chichester.
Jean-Claude and Margaret Barrault
were initiators and founder Trustees of the Charity. Jean-Claude
handled all the original applications and was Treasurer, handing over to Andrew
Holt in October 2008. Margaret is a dentist in Haywards Heath in
Sussex and was a Trustee until early 2008. Jean-Claude is the
practice manager of their busy dental practice, which established a formal link
with Kagando in 2000. They have provided substantial equipment for dentistry,
and other support for the hospital and the community including training for a dental officer. They
resigned from Trusteeship in 2008 for family health reasons but remain in
regular contact with key staff in Kagando.
(See the Dentistry page).
Nick
Gowland-Hopkins was invited to join the Trustees in 2003 to gain the benefit of his independence from the origins of the project and his general and
special experience. Nick is a consultant vascular surgeon and medical educationalist living with his wife Carol near Haywards Heath. They have
visited Kagando and take a particular interest in medical training and sponsorship for specialist training. He resigned in 2011 when it was clear that his full-time work commitments made attending
Trustee meetings regularly was becoming difficult to sustain.
Chaplain
Phil Hickling joined the Trustees in January 2009 but resigned in 2011 for health
and business related reasons. He retains an active interest in Kagando.
After training as a water engineer he worked as a post graduate in Kagando
helping with their first gravity feed water project at what he considers to be a
very important time in his life. He returned to England, marriage and
children and became a computer programmer, now running his own business from his
home in Bishops Frome near Hereford.
Andrew Dow was invited to become 'chaplain' to the Trustees in 2011. This
non-trustee observer role was intended to provide an independent overview of the
functions and performance of the Charity including appraisals, recommendations
and encouragement and attending at least one full board of Trustees
meeting per year. Andrew has recently retired as an Area Dean based in
Cheltenham were he was also Rector of the town centre churches of St Mary with
St Matthew. He held previous appointments in Warwickshire and Bristol.
He worked for VSO in Uganda in the West Nile District in the late '60s, where he
met Maureen Moore, and visited Kagando in 2009. He and his wife,
Miriam, now live in Stratford.
