Sand Filter Project
Known in Kagando as the 'Kisinga Community Clean Water Project'
(Kisinga is the nearby village that gives its name to the administrative
area of 'Kisinga Sub-County')
This is an initiative led by
Geoff Carrier, an IT specialist from Derbyshire. The Friends of
Kagando, and KARUDEC, are affiliated with his project and help Geoff's
team by transfer of funds and some liaison work. Through
independent links within South Rwenzori Diocese, Geoff heard about the
Cholera in the area including the epidemic in 2009, and knew that
patients were going to Kagando Hospital for treatment. He thought
it would be an ideal area in which to test out the principles and
practice of sand-based water filters. This method of cleaning
water uses filters that can be produced and maintained locally for use
in difficult areas away from a clean piped water supply and where
boiling water for drinking poses practical and even cultural
difficulties.
This project is going to become
even more important as Kagando continues to struggle with a new Typhoid epidemic. [see
the TYPHOID page]
KARUDEC has been very active in supporting and managing gravity fed clean
piped water supplies to a
large population around Kagando, but it does not reach everyone There are
places where people still collect their water from streams, rivers and
ponds. In these situations it is hoped that, with experimentation and
education, methods will be found to enable the people to clarify and purify
the water and change their habits in order to prevent dangerous water-born
diseases. The
initial developments have used large clay jars made by a local potter.
These are then filled with graded sand and can stand within a house and
provide drinking water for up to ten people. During the testing
process it has become clear that the right type of sand is important,
however the team has been encouraged by the absence of any relevant
illness in the families that have been using them so far.
The photographs with accompanying text below illustrate and explain aspects of the
project.
