The gift to KARUCOM represented by this card will allow
others to borrow and as it is repaid the money will be lent on to others again
and again.
KARUCOM is KARUDEC’s Micro-Finance scheme.
It lends money to
alleviate poverty and allow particularly women a way of generating income for
the essentials of life. Many set up
small businesses. They receive
supervision and encouragement from the KARUCOM staff.

(top of page)There are so many needs for money in Kagando that at times it seems overwhelming. The Trustees of the Friends of Kagando try to choose projects that are likely to have benefits in the medium and longer term. However we are also willing to help in emergency situations when there is no other way.
For donations via this 'Alternative Gifts' initiative, the Trustees are recommending that all the money go towards building up more capital in the Micro-Finance scheme. It is one of the KARUDEC managed schemes designed to bring new skills and income generation into the community.
Micro-Finance: (top of page)
The Micro-Finance scheme lends money to alleviate poverty and allow particularly women a way of generating income for the essentials of life. Many set up small businesses. They receive supervision and encouragement from the staff.
When the money is repaid, usually within 6 months to 1 year, the money is re-loaned to another person, so increasing the value of the gift, ... again and again ...
Examples:
Mzee Eric, who needed £500 to buy 200 laying hens and is now selling enough eggs for a sustainable business
Constance, a widow, who needed £35 for a dairy goat providing milk for her family with some left over to sell
Charles, who needed £17 for a beehive
The brick-maker who needed money to pay the four men who dug the mud to make the sun dried bricks which he fired in a locally made kiln and sold
Monica, who needed £200 for stock for her medicine store
Edraya and her husband, who needed £300 to buy selected seasonal produce such as coffee from small producers and trade on to large buyers
Other Needs:
Fund-raisers like the 'Friends' know that donors like to know that their money will be used wisely. They often like to designate what it will go towards, reflecting their own interests and priorities. There is usually room for such requests and the 'Friends' operate a number of 'Restricted' funds on behalf of donors. The trustees are recommending the Microfinance scheme for the Alternative Gift initiative at this particular time, but are willing to consider other projects. However the fewer strings attached, the easier it is for the leadership in Kagando to exercise their responsibilities according to the needs at the time.
The 'Friends' tab at the top of the page gives more information about how funds have been spent and make some suggestions on other projects and areas of need within the Kagando community.
